Technology, Fitness, Spartans and Data: Part One

by | May 6, 2016 | Articles, Innovation

In this blog series I am going to explore the various technologies that have crept into my everyday training regime, the data they produce and where that data goes as I prepare myself to get in shape for the Spartan Sprint, Spartan Super and The Grim Original. I will be completing all of these events for the child’s cancer charity.

So I’m going to call this the introduction to it all, and start off with some hard facts:

About me:

  • I’m 34 years old
  • I’m 5’7 or 173cm tall
  • I weigh 83.2kg
  • I hate running
  • The furthest I’ve ever run was 8 miles; I was 29 at the time and slow. Let’s call it a walk!
  • I attempted this again last year and broke my foot, twice, this meant I have now had effectively a year off running training

THE CHALLENGES

Reebok Spartan Race

Oct 1st, Windsor: The Reebok Spartan Sprint. This is the shortest distance. It is perfect for athletes of all levels; from Spartan first timers to seasoned racers. The 3-5 Mile Sprint may be the shortest distance but it packs more than 20 Signature Spartan Obstacles.

Sept 4th, Peterborough: The Reebok Spartan Super. This is the middle distance course. With a longer distance than the Sprint and more obstacles, the Super will test endurance, perseverance and grit. The 8-10 Mile Super packs more than 25 Signature Spartan Obstacles through tougher and more rugged terrain.

The Grim Original

Dec 3rd: The Grim Original was started in 2002 and it’s a gruelling 8 mile run through Aldershot military proving ground, on the 3rd of December. Mud, Rock, Rivers, Snow and Ice. It’s got the lot and it’s usually between 0 and -5°C.

So that’s it for the first blog. Next week I will be discussing the technologies I will be using to enhance my training, the training methods, and how the data ties in with exercise.
