Professionalism marks Future-tech out at Mylan

Future-tech’s approach to a new-build computer facility for pharmaceutical business Mylan, not only created an impression of extreme professionalism with the client, but also won the specialist data centre contractor a second project on the back of the first.

THE BRIEF

When Mylan’s UK Information Systems Manager, Mike Thurston was looking for a contractor to construct a new computer room at his company’s Potter’s Bar site, Future-tech was the stand-out candidate for the job. Mylan was reconfiguring the way it uses its UK headquarters building and saw the opportunity to move its key systems equipment from a small fourth floor server room to a new-build space on the first floor.

CHALLENGES AND CONSTRAINTS

The main challenge within this project was all works had to be carried out at the weekend and therefore, this involved some sensitive negotiation with Mylan, their landlord and the relevant Network Rail departments – Future-tech needed a solution.

THE FUTURE-TECH SOLUTION

The design and build of the new micro data centre took advantage of Mylan’s own systems consolidation that now enables them to derive far more computing power from far fewer cabs. We stripped out and refurbished the space, installed the raised access flooring and a new suspended ceiling, along with all the switchgear and other electrical systems and the network cabling. Key to the project was providing more efficient, energy saving, UPS systems and cooling. The building is above Network Rail’s Potter’s Bar Station and involved dismantling existing condensers on the roof and installing two new air handling units. The works were carried out on site during the working week and on several weekends and there was no disruption to Mylan. Future-tech were later commissioned for their power and data upgrade including CAT6 data cabling across the first floor of the data centre building.

Both Projects were completed on time and within budget, providing Mylan with an efficient computer room to support their systems.

One of the key aspects to the Future-tech relationship is that we have access to the whole company, from the Engineers to the Managing Director
