Future-tech understands the responsibility we have as current guardians of our planet, and we are passionate about helping to protect our natural environment. While we strive to adhere to sustainable working practices and producing energy efficient data centre designs, we also wanted to contribute to global conservation projects.

We have therefore partnered with Eden Reforestation Projects, an organisation that works to restore environments around the world by reforestation, while lifting local communities out of extreme poverty.

One project Future-tech contributes to is the Mahubo planting site in Mozambique, which opened in October 2020.

Located in the Boane district, the Mahubo site covers approx. 82km of land, near a local village of over 102,000 residents. The population of Mozambique are reliant on the country’s forest and natural resources, in particular Mangrove trees.

Mangrove trees play a vital role in the environment – not only do they provide utilisable resources, but they also protect water quality, capture CO2, and provide natural infrastructure and protection from erosion and storm impacts. These trees are also extremely important to the wider ecosystem.

This area has seen massive losses to its Mangrove forests, due to overharvesting for charcoal and timber. To tackle this issue, the Eden team are restoring the area by employing local people and planting a variety of species, including the native Rizhopora red, Ceriops spurred and Bruguiera large-leafed orange mangroves.

When the Mahubo site was first opened, Eden intended to plant and nurture over 4 million trees to restore this area. Each year, Future-tech receives a report on the progress of this project, and the fantastic efforts the Eden team are doing to improve local livelihoods and the environment with our continued support.

Since the site opened, Eden have planted 1,841,764 trees, and created over 1,500 employment days since 2021.

Not only is the project making great progress helping the ecosystem, there’s also been a significant socioeconomic impact on the local community through employment at the site.

Future-tech are excited to see how our contributions help the reforestation project to grow the Mahubo site into a thriving ecosystem and continue to improve conditions for the local population.
