The University of Sussex, based near Brighton, has awarded a design and build contract for their new high density data centre to Future-tech, the Berkshire based data centre specialists. After a rigorous and close run selection process the University and appointed consultants felt Future-tech’s solution offered the best value and most sustainable solution submitted.
The lead Consultant on the project said, “We are very pleased to have been awarded this contract. I personally enjoy working with Universities as they really want to embrace innovation and tend to look at the long term benefits gained by owning and operating their own IT infrastructure. The new high density data centre will cater for the University’s I.T. hardware requirements for a minimum of 10 years”.
The particular cooling solution proposed by Future-tech can accommodate IT loads up to 45kW per rack however to ensure maximum cooling efficiency and utilisation of free cooling Future-tech have designed the system to support an IT load of 20kW per rack. These rack densities are becoming ever more popular due to organisations consolidating their existing I.T. infrastructure by utilising such technologies as Blade servers and VM Ware. Richard Lumb, Future-tech’s Technical Director added “Striking the right balance between rack capacity and cooling efficiency is vital. We want to design the most sustainable data centres possible, this means there must be enough capacity to support our clients’ growth while at the same time have minimum running cost and environmental impact.”
