Green Issues

Whether planning a new data centre or working within an existing one, minimising your energy use has to be a priority

"The system went live in October 2009, and we’re already seeing significant benefits in terms of reducing our energy usage. In fact we’re so pleased with what’s been done to date that we’ve now commissioned Future-Tech for a second phase of work to introduce free air cooling across the whole computer room."

Peter Allwright – Data Centre Manager, Sainsbury’s

With over 25 years of data centre design and build experience Future-Tech have created a series of short, outcome focussed, training courses and workshops.

We understand that losing a member of staff for three or four days while on a training course costs money and can put a strain on your resources. With this in mind our courses and workshops have been designed to deliver exactly the information and results you need in the shortest time possible.

1. The European Code of Conduct on Data Centre Energy Efficiency

This one day workshop focuses on achieving four objectives

  • Having a good basic understanding of the code and its benefits to your organisation
  • Understanding the joining criteria and on-going commitment
  • Completing the application forms
  • Understanding how to practically apply the best practice principles to your data centre

The morning session takes delegates through why the code was introduced, its aims and objectives, its scope & structure and the benefits of joining. The afternoon session concentrates on three points, choosing Participant or Endorser status, completing the application forms and understanding how to practically apply the best practice principles to your own data centre.

Our aims are that every delegate leaving the workshop has achieved these four outcomes and to ensure that applying for the appropriate Code of Conduct status will be quick and easy for you or your member of staff responsible for your data centre and its continual improvement.

2. Improving energy efficiency in existing data centres

Broadly based on Future-Tech’s white paper “Quick Wins for Improving Air Conditioning Efficiency in existing data Centres”, this half day seminar looks at four different methods of improving data centre efficiency. Covering the benefits, disadvantages and limitations of each of the methods, this course gives delegates the opportunity to talk through their own data centre set-up and understand which of these methods would benefit them the most. Delegates can also discuss the realistic price implications of any such changes with a consultant who has 35 years of experience in designing and improving data centres.

3. Designing energy efficiency into new data centres

Covering the most innovative and cutting edge methods of powering and cooling data centres, this half day seminar is aimed at delegates who require a broad understanding of the different options available to them and their organisation. Offering a good basic foundation in the most up-to-date practices and giving delegates the opportunity to discuss pros and cons before engaging with a consultant or embarking on their competitive tendering process.

4. Air-conditioning as applied to data centres

This half-day seminar is intended for data centre managers and operators with little or no knowledge of air conditioning. It explains the principles of psychrometrics and the refrigeration cycle and the differences between the various air conditioning systems available and the relative merits of each.

Class sizes are small so that the presentation can be tailored to delegates own data centres. By the end of the session all attendees will have a good understating of their own installation and opportunities for improving its efficiency.

5. “Free cooling” for data centres

This module is intended as a follow-on from the above seminar or on its own for data centre managers and operators who already have a reasonable knowledge of air conditioning.

It looks specifically at the different types of “free cooling” available to data centres and the physical requirements, limitations and benefits of each. Whether you are about to commission a new data centre or want to improve an existing facility this half day seminar will allow delegates to leave with a comprehensive understanding of all the most up to date free cooling methods.
