Professionalism marks Future-Tech out at Mylan

Future-Tech’s approach to a new-build computer facility for pharmaceutical business Mylan not only created an impression of extreme professionalism with the client, but also won the specialist data centre contractor a second project on the back of the first.

When Mylan’s UK Information Systems Manager, Mike Thurston was looking for a contractor to construct a new computer room at his company’s Potter’s Bar site, Future-Tech was the stand-out candidate for the job. “We looked at our existing cabling company, but quickly realised this was a rather larger and more specialist project that required a specialist contractor,” Mike said.

“From the first meeting Future-Tech created a good impression and more than lived up to our expectations throughout the project. Unlike some contractors, Future-Tech worked with us, taking away any problems that surfaced during the project and anticipating our needs.”

Mylan was reconfiguring the way it uses its UK headquarters building and saw the opportunity to move its key systems equipment from a small fourth floor server room to a new-build space on the first floor.

A Micro-solution

The design and build of the new micro data centre took advantage of Mylan’s own systems consolidation that now enables them to derive far more computing power from far fewer cabs as Future-Tech’s Pete Sands explained: “What used to require a 100 cab data centre can now be done with 10 cabs, so we were able to build an effective data centre in a space far smaller than would have been needed just a few years ago.

“We stripped out and refurbished the space, installed the raised access flooring and a new suspended ceiling, all the switchgear and other electrical systems and the network cabling. Key to the project was providing more efficient, energy saving, UPS systems and cooling. “The building is above Network Rail’s Potter’s Bar Station and involved dismantling existing condensers on the roof and installing two new air handling units. This work had to be carried out at the weekend and involved some sensitive negotiation with Mylan, their landlord and the relevant Network Rail departments.

“Installing two Emerson Liebert DX downflow units enabled us both to improve the air flow but also gain more redundancy on the cooling, helping to reduce energy usage significantly. While the Mylan operation is not 24/7, it was also important to provide a UPS offering the highest efficiencies at low load and the capability to operate with leading power factors. Our solution of an Emerson Liebert 30kVA UPS will enable Mylan to keep the room online and key systems such as telephony operating in the event of a major power failure.”

Good work ethic

“Future-Tech were on site during the working week and on several weekends and there was no disruption to our business,” Mike added. “They managed the project very effectively, ensuring the right people were on site at the right time, and everyone we dealt with had a very good work ethic. We were so impressed with what they brought to the project that I had no hesitation in commissioning them for our power and data upgrade including CAT6 data cabling across the first floor of the building. I’ve nothing but praise for the way they operated.”
